Chapter Sixteen
“I need to confront Kyle. See what he knows.” Jayne fidgeted in the passenger seat of Danny’s truck. They had dropped her mother off at her friend Barbara’s house down the street for a visit. Jayne seemed encouraged that her mother wouldn’t be spending the morning in front of the TV.
“It’s not too late. We can call this off. I’ll talk to him on my own. Leave you out of it.” Danny braked a few blocks away from the mayor’s home.
“I need to look him in the eye.” She fumbled with the tablet in her lap.
“And you really need to return that.”
“Who’s going to miss it?” Her tone cut through him, and she turned her back to him. “Melinda’s dead. And I want to find out what happened. Her parents probably don’t even know she had this.”
Danny pulled over and unclicked his seat belt, hoping to draw her attention. “Are you going to ignore me?”
Her shoulders rose and fell on a heavy sigh. After a long moment, she shifted in her seat to face him. A hesitant look flashed in her eyes. “Do you think I’m crazy?”
“I think you’re looking for answers where there might not be any. Sometimes bad things happen. Period.”
Jayne patted his chest. “I feel it in my gut. Something else was going on here. Melinda broke up with Kyle and had plans to move to New York City.” The sting of that secret was evident in her tone. “That’s enough to make a clingy boyfriend snap.”
Danny covered her hand with his, and she lifted her bright-blue eyes to meet his eyes. A shy smile tilted the corners of her lips.
Good grief, this is Patrick’s little sister.
He patted her hand, then removed it from his chest. “You want to find answers.”
“Exactly!” Some of the light dimmed from her eyes. “But you don’t think there are answers. You think I’m crazy.”
His tucked a strand of her hair behind her ear. “No, not at all. What I do think is that Melinda had a few secrets. I think Kyle is probably a jerk. Do I think he had a hand in her accident?” Danny twisted his lips. “I can’t see it. He’s needy. Not malicious.”
“I have a bad feeling . . .”
Danny took her hand and traced an arc with his thumb. “I also know you’re a good friend. Let’s go see what Kyle has to say. Put your mind at ease.”
He palmed the gearshift and pulled it back to drive. Jayne covered his hand. “Wait.”
He jammed it back into park before they’d moved away from the curb.
“Maybe I should go alone. Keep you out of this.”
“Why would I want that?” He played coy. The chief was going to kill him for continuing to mix it up with the mayor’s son, especially when the mayor was down nine points in the polls.
“Kyle is the mayor’s son. Your dad’s boss.”
“I said I’d take you and I’m not going back on my word.” Helping Jayne see this through to the end was what he needed to do, even if the only thing he’d ultimately give her was peace of mind.
